Spanish Great Dane: History, Characteristics And Curiosities

Great Dane Spanish: history, characteristics and curiosities

The Spanish Great Dane, popularly known as the “Spanish Bulldog”, is a fairly unknown breed, born and bred in Spain. From an age point of view, it is a very ancient type of dog. It is generally regarded as one of the best hunting dogs, and its name is often associated, in a too simplistic way, with other dogs with a not entirely positive reputation, such as the Pitbull or the Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

History of the Spanish Great Dane

Its name derives from the Alani people, a nomadic people of Iranian ethnicity who came to Europe during the fourth century, coming from the distant northern Caucasus. These had a breed of dog used in various aspects of their daily activities. Probably, the true ancestor of the animal that everyone can appreciate today.

This breed was mentioned by King Alfonso XI of Spain in one of his treatises on hunting made in the fifteenth century. It also appears in the paintings of Velázquez or in the writings of Cervantes.

The Alans used this animal for warfare, hunting, and livestock control. In addition, the Spanish army allegedly used it during the conquest of the Americas. Unfortunately, the animal would also be used in bullfighting shows , forced to fight to the death against angry bulls.

Its historical importance is not only evidenced by the different works of art in which the Spanish Great Dane appears. The names of famous specimens have also come down to us. The best example is that of Becerrillo, Sancho de Aragón’s dog, who is said to have given his life to save that of the famous ruler.

Characteristics and behavior

This imposing canid  has a large head and a powerful jaw, is of strong constitution, weighing up to 40 kg. Its coat can have very different colors, from grayish to bay, to dark brown and red. It has thick, wrinkled skin.

The behavior of the Spanish Great Dane is similar to that of other hunting dogs, it is a restless animal that needs to go out for walks, play, run and exercise several times a day. It is a complicated animal to manage and difficult to educate, but of absolute fidelity.

The best element of his personality is certainly courage, which is why he was used to hunt the most dangerous species, such as wild boar. In history books and period tales, the authors state that the Spanish Great Dane easily managed to get the better of many wild animals.

How to take care of the Spanish Great Dane

In order for your Spanish Great Dane to be happy, you will need to dedicate a lot of time to it. A first tip is to take him for a walk three times a day, at least.

Even if it is a short-haired animal, it is advisable to brush it at least once a week, and to keep its ears, mouth and eyes clean. You will need to pay particular attention to the creases on his face, as they can promote the formation of diseases such as dermatitis.

If, from a character point of view, it is not an overly sociable breed, one of its advantages certainly should be remembered the fact that it  has a solid immune system that protects it from various diseases. Attention to nutrition: in adulthood, some specimens can tend to gain weight quite quickly.

Obviously, like any pet, it is essential to make a first visit to the vet to establish a vaccine schedule and receive more specific information on the type of diet, based on  age and size.

A really strong dog, even resistant to changes in temperature and who does not mind sleeping in the open air. During the summer months, however, pay particular attention to ensure that your four-legged friend always has enough fresh water.

Use of the Spanish Great Dane

In addition to its role as a war dog, herding dog, and wrestler in bullfighting shows, this breed has had multiple functions in the past, but which can still be developed today. Among these, its use as a hunting dog for big game stands out. We also need to mention its use in livestock management, especially with adult cattle and bullfighting bulls.

In short, typical activities in a country like Spain where, fortunately, today hunting is limited and in many regions even bullfights no longer find the consensus of the past. The Spanish Great Dane is therefore almost completely  out of work and can become an excellent companion animal.

Not surprisingly, some breeders in the Valle de Mena, in the north of the Iberian country, in recent years have further purified the breed, to make it more tame and suitable  for life in metropolitan areas. A truly extraordinary dog, endowed with a character that accepts intimidation and with a long millennial past.
