Dogs In Wheelchairs Enjoy The Sea

Dogs in wheelchairs enjoy the sea

Dogs that have had their hind legs amputated (as a result of an accident or illness) use special carts that help them lead as normal a life as possible. And, of course, they can enjoy the sea! We tell you the stories of some dogs in wheelchairs who have shown how to be happy despite adversity … a true example of life!

Dogs in wheelchairs in La Caleta dels Gossets

The Spanish association “Bichos raros” is committed to making any dog’s dream come true: spending a day on the beach playing and splashing in the salty waves. This activity, however, was different from the others: all the animals that took part in the walk had mobility problems. They use wheelchairs that are properly equipped for their needs.

The place chosen was the Caleta del Gossets, a beach in Alicante (Spain), which allows dogs all year round. It is the first dog beach in the region and the second in the province. Here, animals can spend their holidays and have a lot of fun.

The foundation that takes care of these little dogs depends on solidarity and money donated by special people. It does not count with a shelter, all dogs (suffering from some disability) live in rehabilitation centers. Thanks to the contribution of the volunteers, the association was able to pay for the trip to take them to the sea.

A total of 17 dogs traveled from Madrid to Alicante. There they spent a beautiful sunny day in the open air and full of games, regardless of wheelchairs. All the people present that day approached the organizers to compliment their work. The little dogs, in addition to sand and water, enjoyed the affection and caresses of the people.

The Spanish initiative is truly worthy of admiration and applause. Fortunately, it is not the only one. In fact, in Peru, an organization called “Milagros perrunos”, founded by Sara Morán, raises funds for the treatment and food for dogs, but also to organize walks on the beach.

The idea is to allow animals to live in the best possible way while they wait to be adopted. This association of the city of Chorrillos is home to around 40 dogs suffering from paraplegia or without hind legs. The contribution of volunteers is essential to meet all the needs of these animals, including fun walks by the sea.

Why adopt a dog in a wheelchair?

When a family goes to the kennel, they usually choose a young and healthy dog. Older, sick or disabled dogs are almost always waiting. If we could understand that an animal with “problems” is equally (or more) affectionate and faithful than others, perhaps we would adopt it without hesitation.

If you want to welcome a dog in a wheelchair, you will need to learn some important questions about the special care they need. For the rest, it requires the same attention as any other animal. Certainly in the kennel there will be professionals who will be able to guide you and help you. Knowing the animal’s situation well is essential to understand its disability or difficulty.

Once a disabled dog is adopted, we should adapt to his condition. For example, we will have to guarantee him a spacious place to move or a ramp through which to go into the yard. We will also need to pay attention to your special needs, such as precise dressing of the affected area or maintenance of the trolley.

We must understand that for dogs there is no disability, it is a concept of the human being. The animal, therefore, will be happy to have a family and will not notice that it uses wheels instead of legs. No prejudice or fear. Adopting a dog in a wheelchair or with other mobility problems is the greatest act of love that can be performed.
