A Contest That Rewards The Ugliness Of Animals

A contest that rewards the ugliness of animals

For some, there are no ugly dogs. In the eyes of their masters they are all beautiful or, at least, they are tender and always make us smile. Apparently, however, those who took care of this competition do not think the same way. While it may sound a little cruel, a competition has been running in California for years  that rewards pet ugliness.

Reward the ugliness of pets

Most contests involving animals are based on the beauty or dexterity of the contestants. In a world where physical appearance is most important, a competition in which the winners are the ugliest dogs certainly attracts attention.

That’s right. This event, which already has several editions behind it, chooses every year the dogs that cannot be considered “cute”. The prize for the winner is $1,500, as well as a trophy, a photo shoot by a professional and a luxurious dinner for the animal and his family.

The 29th edition of the pet ugliness competition took place in the city of Petaluma, California (United States), and 14 animals participated.

This competition is not intended to make fun of animals, but to raise awareness of adoption without giving weight to the physical characteristics of the animal. Representatives of the event claim that these animals are wonderful beings and sweet companions despite their physical appearance.

Contest CEO Erin Post said the organizers are very proud to be able to pay homage to these dogs who, despite their imperfections, are sweet, adorable, and definitely worth adopting. Ideal for any family.

The aim of the contest, it is evident, is not to emphasize the ugliness of these animals, but to show people that it is important to save stray dogs or adopt those that are not purebred.

Martha, the winner of the contest

This year the winner was a 3-year-old Neapolitan Mastiff named Martha, a native of the city of Sebastopol, California. His story certainly deserves to be told. She was rescued from a shelter after her masters’ negligence cost her her sight.

After having undergone several surgeries, Martha is now happy with her new family, plus she’s the gorgeous winner of this contest. She was entered into the competition by her owner, Jessica Burkard, and she looks like a really nice little dog to us. And that’s not all, as he will participate in a very popular morning program in the United States: The Today Show , which is recorded in New York.

Second place went to a Brussels Griffon dog named Moe. This “old man” is blind and deaf and always keeps his tongue out. However, he hasn’t lost his sense of smell and recognizes food from miles away, his mistress proudly said.

Last year’s winner: Sweepee Rambo

The previous edition of this contest was won by a dog, a cross between a Chihuahua and a Chinese Crested Dog, named Sweepee Rambo. At 17, blind, with several white hairs on his forehead and his tongue always sticking out, he was crowned and enjoyed the caresses of everyone present. His master, 44-year-old Jason Wurtz, said he would use the prize money to pay for the eradication of a tumor in his gums.

This little guy who wears a diaper due to his physical condition, won the hearts of the family who welcomed him.
