A Soundproof Box For The Cat

We all know that cats love peace and fright at the slightest sudden noise. A house is full of sounds that make them jump: the vacuum cleaner, the blender, the fall of an object on the ground. And if we talk about parties at home or on the street, fireworks and loud music can represent a serious problem for our little friends.

The cat’s reaction to a loud and continuous noise is usually to run away, hide, meow or tremble. To help him get through these moments, a good idea is to have a place where he can go to take refuge and where the noise is muffled, such as a closet shelf. We can arrange a blanket to make the animal feel comfortable or even spray this corner with its favorite aroma.

In this emergency hideout we will make sure that the cat has enough food and water for as long as he needs to feel safe.

We must, first of all, try to take some measures so that noises do not frighten the animal excessively, such as closing the windows and shutters if there are barrels or fireworks outside. In this way, we will not only dampen the noise, but also the visual impact of the flashing lights. Closing doors and windows will also ensure that the cat does not run away from home in fear.

A soundproof box can be a good solution

A good solution to help your cat overcome her fear of noise is to build a soundproof box. In the event of a scheduled event, it will be advisable to prepare it well in advance, to allow the cat to get used to its new shelter.

Materials needed:

For the construction of the soundproof box, you must obtain:

  • A box.
  • Polystyrene or polystyrene sheets, one of the best acoustic insulators.
  • Glue.
  • Paper or fabric for lining. Avoid using newspaper: cats love to rub against the walls of the shelter and would end up breaking everything.

Preparation:

  • First, cut  the door from one side of the cardboard box so the cat can get in and out easily. You can, for example, draw an arc and cut it out.
  • Now shape the polystyrene plates with which you will insulate the inside of the box. In addition to making it comfortable and warm, you will get a soundproofing effect. Insulate the roof and base of the box.
    • Once you have arranged the polystyrene, seal the box well above and below, so that it does not open.
    • Styrofoam or other insulating material should be lined  with paper, canvas or other suitable material. Stretch the fabric or paper well, without leaving creases, to prevent the cat from tearing it.

Among the most suitable insulating materials, extruded polystyrene is one of the most pleasant to the touch and is a good acoustic insulator. It is also used as an insulating material in construction. The quiet atmosphere of this shelter box will please your four-legged friend very much. Cats love silence!

If, on the other hand, you glue a strip of velcro on each edge of the box, you can fold it and open it as you wish or take it on the road.

Finally, if you want to give a touch of design to the box, you can draw some windows on the external sides, or indulge yourself in decorating the inside of the “house”, gluing, for example, photographs of cats or their favorite food.
