Field Spaniel, a very special dog

History and origins

This breed is said to share much of its genetic makeup with the Cocker Spaniel, because its origin is likely the same. However, in the year 1892 the two types of dogs were separated precisely to give birth to two separate and well-defined breeds.

Just by looking at this beautiful dog, he will win you over. Both for its beautiful appearance and for its pleasant and docile character. The dog we know today is the result of a deep selection work by breeders. Their goal was to create a sturdy, one-colored, spotless dog, eventually making some of the original Spaniel’s qualities disappear. Over the years, Field Spaniel specimens have been crossed with other breeds to have shorter legs and longer bodies. However, this caused some genetic problems that threatened to endanger its survival.

In order to remedy this mistake, breeders have begun to cross it with the English Springer Spaniel, thus managing to curb genetic problems, guaranteeing more longevity and better physical constitution to the breed. In terms of popularity, very few people know about this breed, which begins to conquer space right now.

Physical characteristics of the Field Spaniel

The appearance is very similar to the Cocker Spaniel, it is of medium size, hairy, with long white ears and a noble bearing. Males usually measure around 45 centimeters in height at the withers, while females only 43. Of course, there are also differences in weight, which can range from 23 to 50 kg.

The shape of its head is rounded, with a long, narrow muzzle and almond-shaped eyes, which are dark brown in color. Its body is regal, muscular and strong with a deep chest and, typically, tailless. There is a habit of cutting it but, in some cases, specimens are born without it.

Their paws have a harmony and a practically perfect proportion, they are covered by a lot of hair which, as in the rest of the body, is very soft and silky. His feet are round and compact, which allows him secure support when walking and taking long walks.

As seen, the hair is abundant, thick, soft to the touch all over the body, although much more in the area of the legs, chest, ears and belly. Camel, black and reddish colors are allowed. In some cases, bright red spots are allowed, but only if they don’t stand out too much from the main hue. In some special cases the white color was also accepted.

Character and temperament of the Field Spaniel

Although originally used as hunting dogs, these animals are very good and adapt to home life, as is the case with other types of Spaniels. They need to do a lot of activity, but they are very docile and easy to train, tolerant with children and faithful, a little wary of strangers. They are very attached to their master (even in a family they choose one, which they consider as ‘pack leader’), but sometimes this very strong attachment can become an obsession.

Care and health

To take care of the Field Spaniel, you must first take care of its coat. These animals need constant grooming, because the texture and length of the hair can create knots and facilitate the presence of unwanted guests. If you plan to adopt one, remember that you will also have to clean your eyes well, every day, because the cisps could stick to the hair and generate infections.

The shape of their ears is particular and, unfortunately, represents a wedding invitation for the proliferation of parasites and bacteria that can cause disease. For this reason, they need to be checked and cleaned with a cloth every day.

Since hunting is less and less fashionable now, fortunately, you can certainly adopt a beautiful specimen of Field spaniel and turn it into your best four-legged friend. Now that you know practically everything about this beautiful dog breed, open the doors of your home to him: he will fill it with affection and sweetness.
