Today we are going to tell you some stories of dogs who have proved loyal to their owners, even when death has intervened between them.

Bobby, the dog that belonged to John Gray

Bobby’s story takes us back to the nineteenth century, in Edinburgh, Scotland. The protagonist of this story is a Terrier dog belonging to a policeman named John Gray. Man and animal were inseparable, and the animal had become famous for the stunts it was able to perform.

Unfortunately, however, Gray died of tuberculosis. Bobby was there for the duration of his friend’s funeral, then following the funeral procession to the cemetery. And there he remained, above his master’s grave, for the next 14 years of his life.

Over time,  Bobby developed into a real local legend, earning the affection of the people, who used to bring him food and offer him shelter during the harsh Scottish winters.

As was inevitable, Bobby also died, on his master’s grave. The locals then decided to erect a statue in his honor, near the cemetery, facing the place where John Gray had been buried.

Fido, the dog who waited for his master at the train station

The story of Fido dates back to the last century and takes place in a small Tuscan village, Borgo San Lorenzo, where a mixed breed animal lived, adopted by a young man named Luigi, who was a carpenter by trade.

Every morning the little dog accompanied his master to the train station, and then in the evening he returned to the same place waiting for the man, who would return from work.

The routine that bound the two, however, was brutally interrupted by the Second World War: Luigi was recruited and sent to Russia. Nonetheless, the dog continued to rush to the train station every evening to wait for his beloved master. But the young man never returned.

Yet Fido continued to go to the station every single day of his life, until the last. Regardless of the arthritis that barely allowed him to walk, the animal walked the same path every night, in vain. Until, on a cold winter afternoon, the wind and snow put an end to his life. His body was found the next day, frozen.

The locals, now fond of the animal, erected a statue in honor of Fido next to the train station, on which it is still possible to read: “A fido, example of fidelity”.

Collie, the dog of the Cementerio de la Piedad

Closer in years and in a more southern area of the world takes place the story of Collie, who decided to stay next to his master’s grave in the Cementerio de la Piedad, in Rosario, Argentina.

Collie arrived on the spot the very day his master was buried, and spent the whole night beside his grave. When his family members came to pick him up the next day, they couldn’t get him out of the way. After some time they made another attempt to bring him home, but the dog escaped, hiding among the graves.

Thus it was that the animal lived in the Argentine cemetery until the end of its days, looked after by a local worker. For nine long years he remained at his master’s burial site, despite the fact that after some time the man’s body had been cremated.
