History of the Hungarian hound

The ancestors of this breed – including the Panonian Hound – were hunting dogs that lived near the Danube River.

The local countryside dwellers needed a dog with a keen sense of smell to hunt rabbits and birds. In addition, the dog had to be able to adapt to the climate of the region.

In the 19th century it began to be crossed with other breeds, including the German hound and the pointer.

These crosses gave rise to the breed we know today and the Hungarian Hound has been recognized by the FCI (International Dog Federation) since 1924.

Although it was close to extinction between the two world wars, thanks to the export to the United States in 1950 it was possible to restore the breed gradually.
