We at  My Animals  often echo good news about the sometimes strange relationship between humans and dogs. This time, unfortunately, we are instead telling a very sad story. We are talking about abused dogs, welcomed and protected by an animal rights association which, however, received the eviction order. Many questions now open up, such as the reason for such a decision and, above all, what will become of this defenseless beings.

Where will the abused dogs go?

The  Animalove Foundation was created about four years ago and, since then, has been one of the largest shelters for abused dogs in Colombia. We are talking about about  350 dogs and 30 cats  who, for various reasons, have been left homeless. In this shelter they found completely free protection, food and veterinary care. Members and volunteers look after them on a daily basis, always looking for new families for adoption.

Johana PĂ©rez, director of the Foundation, said she was sadly surprised by the eviction order. In fact, they have already paid in full the annual rent for the land of 12 000 square meters used to house the animals. Furthermore, he made it known that, in recent years, Animalove has invested over 50 million Colombian pesos (about 17,000 euros).

The work is carried out by 10 employees, all regular workers with permanent contracts. Among them, of course, there is also a veterinarian, responsible for treatments and vaccines for almost 400 animals. The foundation is not for profit: it works to save dogs and cats from the street.

The eviction signed by the mayor came as a bolt from the blue. A few years ago, the same municipality forced Johana to collect the signatures of the citizens to authorize the creation of the refuge on this land. Everything took place in full legality and with regular permits. Still, the time has come to close. And now?

Why was the animal rights association evicted?

The eviction order from the local government is based on the land use plan. After a check, someone found that it does not include the use of spaces for  shelters or animal shelters. That is, if it were a restaurant or a  bingo, there would be no problems …

The Foundation, through its lawyers, tried to challenge this act, but without success. The eviction order  has been confirmed and will be implemented shortly.

According to the secretary of the city mayor, the foundation has to close because it does not meet the land use requirements. In addition, he accused Animalove of making money on animals, reminding them that they will have to bear all the transfer costs.

Foundation members and volunteers are organizing a marathon to raise funds to get new land and be able to relocate. There is very little time, given that the bureaucracy, in this case, has proved unusually effective.
