It is true that felines entertain themselves with anything they see next to them : a ball, dust, or a thread dangling from the sofa. Being very independent animals, you just need to buy, or create, a scratching post and let them have fun.
However, if you want to play with your cats when you are indoors, pay attention to the following recommendations.
1. Opt for his favorite toy
Of all the toys, there is likely to be one that our pet loves the most ; even a new one can draw his attention to others. The most chosen ones are those formed by a stick or a rope and with something that moves in one of the two ends.
Another very interesting and fun idea is to offer the cat a cardboard box … cats, of any breed, from Russian blue to Siamese, love them! Drill holes in different parts and “imprison” him while he tries to escape or hide.
2. Play with your cat for half an hour a day
When we return from work, we may be a little tired from playing with our cat, but we must try to enjoy at least thirty minutes in his company. If he’s spent many hours alone, he’ll love getting some attention from us.
3. Stimulate its qualities
We must consider that cats belong to the feline family, which are large predators always on the lookout. It is very important that the games bring out their wildest side, without reaching aggression.
Choose toys or games in which the animal can remain quiet while looking at the “prey” and then has to grab it with its claws. For example, you can use soft toys or plastic mice, but you don’t need to spend money: with a rope to which you can attach an object you can spend several hours playing.
4. Get his attention
Not all cats will show up at their owners’ call to play, unless they are puppies or bored. We humans, therefore, have the task of attracting their attention.
How? We can wave a toy near the animal, move something shiny or bright in front of its eyes, or pretend that it has found prey.
5. Be gentle: the key to playing with your cat
Cats don’t like being annoyed too much and it is possible that ours has a low tolerance threshold and that they don’t always want us around.
Remember that the territory is sacred to felines. Avoid frightening them and making sudden movements if you want to play with them without problems.
6. Do not continue playing if the cat is angry
Through the movement of the tail, we can understand if our pet is in a bad mood or if he is tired of the game. If, for example, he moves her from side to side as if he were whiplashing, he may be irritated.
When the cat lies on its stomach and “hugs” our hand or arm with its front and hind legs while biting or scratching, it is clearly indicating its disappointment. Some cats can get quite aggressive when they play; if they pull out their claws, they can hurt us, even if they don’t want to.
Remember that cats “tell” us when they want to play and when they prefer to do another quieter activity or alone. When their attention is on something else, it can be difficult for them to listen to us. In these cases it is better to abandon the idea of playing with your cat for that day or for several hours.
Cats can have fun even if their owners aren’t home, which is great. Set up some areas of the house with games or toys and let your cats have fun. This way, your furniture will be safe!
